About the Role The Principal Advisor is a key leadership role within Hauora Māori Service, providing strategic advice, specialist expertise, and national oversight. Working within a high-performing national team, the role supports informed decision-making, ministerial servicing, and organisational priorities. The position also strengthens connections between national and regional teams to ensure consistent and effective service delivery. Key responsibilities: Provide expert, evidence-based advice and strategic guidance. Lead national quality assurance and specialist subject matter expertise. Support ministerial servicing, OIA responses, and executive requests. Apply machinery of government knowledge to complex issues and briefings. Represent Hauora Māori Service at national hui and key initiatives. About the Team/Service/ Location As the Hauora Māori Service of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora (Health NZ) our core role is to ensure New Zealanders have better and more timely access to health care. The devolution of resources and decision making to the regions ensures those closest to service users and whānau are involved in decisions on how healthcare is delivered. About you You bring extensive experience operating in complex public sector environments, providing strategic advice, leading high profile work programmes, and navigating machinery of government processes. You are a trusted advisor who can build strong relationships with senior stakeholders, communicate complex concepts with clarity, and deliver outcomes that align with Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the aspirations of Hauora Māori Service. You will have: A relevant tertiary qualification (or equivalent experience) and at least 5 years' experience in a Principal Advisor, Management, or national leadership role. Strong experience working within machinery of government, including ministerial servicing, policy processes, and executive level advice. Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships with senior stakeholders across national, regional, and external environments. Exceptional written communication skills, including the ability to draft clear and concise memos, briefings, board papers, and ministerial submissions on complex and sensitive issues. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem solving skills, including experience leading complex projects and mentoring others. A postgraduate qualification in public policy, health sciences, or equivalent executive-level public sector experience.
