Clinical Nurse Specialist: Leukaemia/MPN- Haematology Be part of New Zealands largest hospital and the Regional Cancer and Blood service Provide active and supportive Haematology care to patients within the Northern Region Catchment Area Permanent full-time Senior Nursing opportunity available 1.0 FTE The Haematology Service at Auckland City Hospital is comprised of a 30-bed inpatient unit including 15 bone marrow transplantation (SCT) beds, a Haematology Day Stay Unit and outpatient clinics. The regional SCT service covers Northland and the greater Auckland region for autologous and allograft transplants and includes the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Lakes and Tairawhiti DHBs for allogeneic transplants. This non-SCT senior nursing position is responsible for providing expert, high-quality nursing care to patients with Leukaemia and Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN), and their whānau, from diagnosis through to treatment. The role involves comprehensive patient assessment, care coordination, education, and advocacy, ensuring patients receive seamless support throughout their treatment journey. As a Nurse Specialist, you will apply advanced clinical expertise and highly developed nursing skills to deliver autonomous, patient-centred care while working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, enabling you to build effective therapeutic relationships with patients, whānau, and healthcare professionals. The position includes independent management of a caseload of non-SCT Leukaemia and MPN patients, while working closely with both non-SCT and SCT medical and nursing teams across inpatient and outpatient services to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care About the Role In this role, your Key duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Provide expert nursing assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for patients with Leukaemia and Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN) across inpatient and outpatient settings. Deliver advanced nursing care throughout the patient pathway, from diagnosis through treatment, follow-up, and survivorship. Monitor patients for treatment-related complications, adverse effects, and disease progression, initiating appropriate interventions and escalation when required. Undertake independent clinical decision-making within the scope of advanced nursing practice. Ensure care is evidence-based, culturally safe, and aligned with organisational policies, standards, and best practice guidelines. Independently manage a caseload of non-SCT Leukaemia and MPN patients. Provide comprehensive education and support to patients and whānau regarding diagnosis, treatment options, symptom management, and self-care strategies. Promote informed decision-making through effective communication and provision of relevant information. Facilitate referrals to allied health, community, primary care, and supportive care services as appropriate. Act as a key point of contact for patients and whānau, ensuring continuity of care throughout the treatment journey. Support patient transitions between inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. Work collaboratively with haematologists, medical staff, nursing teams, allied health professionals, and community providers. Advocate for patients and whānau to ensure equitable access to services and optimal health outcome You are an excellent communicator, adaptable and work well within a team.
