About the role We are seeking a Volunteer Engagement Advisor, 32 hours per week (Tuesday to Friday) for Fixed-term, Part-time, as a 6-month role covering parental leave. This role is one of three part-time Volunteer Engagement Advisors working together to ensure that the right volunteers are recruited, orientated, recognised and supported during their time at Mary Potter Hospice. You also work closely with all the teams across the hospice to support the volunteers that make our work possible. In this varied role, on any given day you could find yourself Advocating for volunteers and contemporary volunteer engagement practices Supporting staff who lead volunteers Carrying out volunteer recruitment and orientation Managing the database and reporting The role may also have volunteers reporting directly to it and will backfill the other Volunteer Engagement Advisors in their absence. The role will provide advocacy for our volunteers and support teams to embed volunteer engagement and management practices across the organisation. You will be based at the Inpatient Unit in Newtown, Wellington. Volunteers are highly valued at Mary Potter Hospice and are integral to providing the best service we can to the people of the Wellington Region. We want our volunteers to feel valued, satisfied, and engaged with their role and the Hospice. We are looking for someone with a love of volunteering and a passion for what volunteers bring to Mary Potter Hospice. You will also have strong relationship and communication skills, HR experience and excellent planning and administration skills. About You You're passionate about volunteering and understand the real difference it makes - both to the individual volunteer and to the organisations they support. You bring HR or recruitment experience, along with strong advocacy and engagement skills, and you know how to build genuine, collaborative relationships with people at all levels. You're action-oriented and outcome-focused, comfortable working independently, and skilled at juggling a busy, varied role with excellent planning and organisation. Your communication skills are excellent - written, verbal, and in facilitating or presenting to groups - and you can navigate differing views or conflict with calm and confidence. You're committed to continuous improvement and staying current with contemporary volunteering practices, and you understand and value biculturalism and Te Tiriti o Waitangi commitments. Intermediate to advanced Excel and Microsoft 365 skills are a must; experience with Better Impact is a bonus. Key Responsibilities Advocate for volunteers and champion best-practice engagement across the Hospice Support and build the capability of Leaders of Volunteers (LoVs) Recruit, coordinate, and promote volunteering opportunities, including new episodic and virtual models Plan and facilitate volunteer orientation and organisation-wide recognition events Manage the volunteer exit process, including exit surveys and feedback Maintain the volunteer management system (Better Impact) and contribute to accurate reporting Provide day-to-day support to a small group of volunteers What We're Looking For Understanding of volunteer management practices, with strong engagement and advocacy skills, and HR/recruitment experience Action-oriented, outcome-focused, and able to work independently, efficiently, and with strong planning skills Excellent written and verbal communication, facilitation, and presentation skills Ability to navigate differing views, conflict, and resistance calmly and constructively, while building collaborative relationships Strong belief in volunteering, with a focus on continuous improvement and contemporary volunteer practices Intermediate to advanced Excel and Microsoft 365 skills, ideally with Better Impact experience, and an understanding of biculturalism and Treaty of Waitangi commitments Join Us If you would like to be part of our team here at Mary Potter Hospice, supporting our community in an important time in their lives, we would love to talk with you further.
