Community Navigator - Northland

Headway NZ Incorporated – Whangarei, North Island This is a new Part-time (12-15hours per week), 12-month contract role for someone who wants to build something meaningful in their own community. We're looking for a Northland Community Navigator to pilot a new service delivery model in the Northland region. Someone who is passionate about guiding people affected by concussion and brain injury toward the right support at the right time and about building community outreach and engagement across their Northland region. This is a relationship-driven role at the heart of Headway's work in the community. You'll be a trusted point of contact for people navigating life after concussion or brain injury — listening with empathy, understanding what matters to them, and connecting them to the right services, groups, and support. You'll build relationships with schools, sports clubs, health providers, and government agencies, set up and oversee Connect Groups across the region, and recruit, induct, and support the volunteers who help run them. No two days will look the same — one day you might be meeting with a local health provider or community group, the next you could be running a Connect Group check‑in, or representing Headway at a community hui. You'll work closely with the wider Headway team, while having the freedom — and the responsibility — to shape how Headway shows up in Northland. Key responsibilities Build relationships with schools, sports clubs, health providers, and government agencies Set up and oversee Connect Groups across the region Recruit, induct, and support volunteers who help run Connect Groups Listen with empathy and connect people affected by concussion or brain injury to the right services, groups, and support Represent Headway at community events and network meetings Manage a flexible, community‑facing schedule across the Northland region About you An appropriate tertiary qualification such as Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech Language Therapy is preferred Proven experience in community engagement, health, disability, social services, or a related field Existing knowledge of, or connections within, the Northland community and its health and social service networks — highly regarded Strong relationship‑building skills, comfortable building networks from the ground up Confident public speaking, comfortable representing Headway at community events and network meetings Highly organised and self‑directed, able to manage a flexible, community‑facing schedule Comfortable using technology eg Microsoft Forms/Teams, Outlook Current, clean driver’s licence and the ability to travel occasionally across Northland Understanding of concussion or brain injury (or a real desire to learn) About us Headway supports and educates people living with concussion and brain injury — and the families, whānau, and communities around them.
