Solicitor - Litigation, Treaty & Māori Legal Issues

Oranganui Legal is a boutique litigation firm based in Paraparaumu. We specialise in representing claimants before the Waitangi Tribunal and Māori applicants seeking recognition of customary interests under the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011. We are looking for a motivated solicitor to join our growing team. The role would suit a junior lawyer with 0-2 years' PQE, although recent graduates and lawyers with greater experience are also encouraged to apply. This is an opportunity to develop genuine litigation experience in specialised and important areas of law. You will work closely with experienced counsel on Waitangi Tribunal proceedings and High Court litigation, with the scope of the role tailored to your experience, strengths and career aspirations. The Role You will receive direct mentorship from our Senior Director while taking an active role in progressing client matters. Depending on your experience, your work will include: analysing evidence and identifying key legal and factual issues; undertaking legal research and providing advice; drafting submissions, memoranda, briefs and other litigation documents; assisting with the development of case and hearing strategy; preparing witnesses and evidence for hearings; attending Waitangi Tribunal and High Court hearings; assisting with applications under the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011; and working directly with clients, including iwi, hapū, whānau and claimant groups. As your experience develops, you will be supported to take greater responsibility for files, client relationships and advocacy. About You We are interested in hearing from candidates who have: 0-2 years' PQE, although candidates with greater experience are welcome to apply; a law degree and eligibility to practise in New Zealand, or are completing/have completed the Professional Legal Studies Course; strong legal research, drafting and communication skills; an interest in litigation, Treaty law, Māori legal issues and/or public law; sound judgement and practical problem-solving skills; excellent organisation and time-management skills; the ability to develop strong and respectful relationships with clients; and a willingness to learn and contribute as part of a close-knit team. Previous experience in civil litigation, Treaty law or Māori land law would be an advantage, but is not essential. More important to us is your attitude, ability and genuine interest in the work. A full driver's licence is required, as the role involves travel for client hui and hearings. Why Join Oranganui Legal?
