Are you an emerging Māori writer in the early stage of your career who has a growing body of work? Would you value the opportunity to be supported to write within a great creative environment? Do you want to spend three months dedicated to working on your latest project full-time? Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently seeking an Emerging Māori Writer in Residence for a three-month funded residency in the first half of 2027. This is an exciting opportunity for emerging Māori writers in Aotearoa. Spend three months working on your latest project with backing from Te Pūtahi Tuhi Auaha o Te Ao - International Institute of Modern Letters, the University's renowned creative writing school, and Creative New Zealand. Applications are invited from Māori writers in all areas of literary activity, including theatre, fiction and poetry (page and performance), devised performance, creative nonfiction, graphic novels, literary translation, but excluding writing for film or television. Projects may be written in English or te reo Māori. There is a writer's stipend of $15,000, a space to write, and creative support from a mentor of your choosing. Candidates must submit the supporting documents requested in the Residency Description linked above. We can only consider applicants who are citizens of New Zealand.
