Tieke Kainga - Kaitiaki (Ranger)

Tieke Kainga Kaitiaki (Ranger) is a fixed-term, seasonal full-time position based at Tieke Kainga along the Whanganui River. The role works rostered hours (7 days on-off) over the busy summer season from October 2026 to April 2027. You will uphold the operational standards while embodying the cultural values and principles of Ngāti Hinekura in the management of Tieke Kainga and facilities within Whanganui National Park. Key responsibilities Maintain cleanliness and safety of hut campsite facilities, marae atea and wharenui Conduct daily and weekly maintenance tasks to high standards and on time Monitor bookings through DOC (Department of Conservation) and hapū booking system Record visitor numbers and maintain accurate logs Welcome, provide information and assistance to visitors Advise visitors of the Marae protocols and standards Ensure compliance with health and safety protocols Act as Fire Warden and Search & Rescue contact Manage radio communications and emergency procedures Monitor and report on environmental conditions and hazards About you Current First Aid Certificate Familiarity with DOC's Standards of Integrity and Conduct Ability to manage risks in remote outdoor settings Commitment to environmental stewardship and cultural respect Interacts productively with a wide range of people Understanding of Māori cultural practices and willingness to learn (day-to-day te reo, waiata and pepeha) Works effectively with others to solve problems and provides support Plans and organises work to deliver to a high standard and on time High personal and professional standards Physically fit and able to carry out tasks unsupervised About us Ngāti Hinekura Hapū and the Department of Conservation jointly manage Tieke Kainga, one of many significant and important Marae along the Whanganui River.
