This opportunity will lead into becoming a Lawyer for the Child, doing human rights litigation, or going into business for yourself The Legal Support Officer (LSO) works with Family Court litigators to ensure the Litigation Team operates efficiently, and assists with the firm’s administration. Reporting to the Principal Lawyer, their role involves building and maintaining customer relationships, properly triaging enquiries, and assisting to meet basic legal needs of clients. The role involves administrative and legal duties as well as a high level of compliance and information management. The Litigation Team provides legal services to clients: strategy, advice, application to and litigation in the Courts. LSOs perform tasks within the reserved areas of work; this is a role that is an ideal way to gain training and experience before entering into the area of family litigation, while still receiving close supervision and support. Attention to detail is essential as all staff have a responsibility for the quality of the data in our systems and the protection of client privacy. They are skilled at basic legal duties , managing casework, and supporting litigators. We expect law graduates who are given the opportunity to work at Portia will commit to the firm for at least three years, but preferably longer. Thus, you need to be absolutely sure family law is where you want to be working - it is a very hard area of law and not for everyone! The role is roughly divided into 50% legal work, 25% administration and 25% case management for the litigation team. Note the base salary increases soon after employment commences (once legal aid supervised provider status is attained) to $60,000. Kiwisaver employer contribution is paid in addition to salary.
