IT Specialist

You will be the person on the ground who owns the hardware we run: the navigation, monitoring and communications systems on our vessels, the networks that connect the fleet to shore, the screens, sound and cameras around the Whale Way Station, the retail and check-in equipment, and the devices our crew, office and research teams use every day. You will not be doing it alone. Our long-standing IT consultant stays on for architecture, specialist depth and escalation, and our software and data platforms are built in-house. What is missing is someone here, hands‑on, who knows what we have, whether it is working, and what happens next. Key responsibilities Own the technology estate — what we have, where it is, and when it needs replacing Manage vessel systems: navigation, monitoring, radio, satellite, onboard screens and audio Manage site infrastructure: networks, servers and storage, cameras, public address, display screens Support the equipment our guests meet — check‑in, scanning, screens — and maintain tested fallback for each Provide day‑to‑day support for around 40 staff: devices, accounts, phones and access Manage the hardware side of projects, including a new reservation platform and the technology and audio‑visual infrastructure for a major new visitor centre About you Solid hands‑on IT infrastructure and support experience — around five years or more Real networking ability. You diagnose a connection problem rather than elevate it Windows, macOS and Microsoft 365 administration Comfort with audio‑visual equipment, screens, sound systems and cabling Practical and self‑directed. Kaikōura is a long way from a supplier, so this suits someone who fixes things themselves and knows when not to try A full New Zealand driver licence, and the willingness to work on vessels and across an early operating day Marine electronics, visitor attraction or retail technology experience is a real advantage — but we will train the right person About us Kaikōura's whales bring the world to our door.
