King’s College is seeking an inspirational and forward-thinking Head of Department – Technology to lead our highly regarded and distinctive Technology Department. This is an opportunity for a technology educator who brings finesse, curiosity, creativity and a genuine passion for what is possible when students are given the skills, tools and freedom to design, make and innovate. This role leads our Hard Materials Technology department, encompassing materials, design, engineering, fabrication and emerging technologies. Our Technology Department is exceptionally well equipped and operates in a way that is distinctive within the Auckland and New Zealand education sector. With specialist expertise across engineering, architecture, design and development, students are exposed to an unusually broad range of knowledge, skills and real-world thinking. We are looking for someone who can build on this strength while bringing new ideas, energy and a willingness to keep learning. About the role As Head of Department, you will provide strategic, educational and people leadership across the Technology curriculum. You will lead a team of passionate Technology educators and help shape a department that is ambitious for its students, responsive to emerging technologies and constantly looking for better ways to teach, learn and create. This role would suit an experienced Technology educator who is ready to take the next step into departmental leadership — or an existing middle leader looking for an opportunity to make a genuine mark on a highly capable and innovative department. We are particularly interested in someone who: Has strong experience in Hard Materials Technology , including practical workshop-based learning, design and making alongside a commitment to evidence based pedagogy. Can teach across relevant secondary Technology curriculum areas and ideally has experience with NCEA and/or Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) . Brings a genuine interest in emerging technologies, design thinking, engineering and innovation. Is confident leading people, developing capability and creating a positive, collaborative team culture. Has the communication skills and emotional intelligence to work effectively with students, staff, parents and senior leaders to promote outstanding academic outcomes. Is curious and open-minded, with the ability to embrace new ideas, challenge traditional thinking and continually develop their own practice. Has the ability to inspire students and teachers alike. Can balance the practical demands of a workshop environment with strategic curriculum and departmental leadership. Demonstrates a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership. Is collaborative, constructive and generous with their expertise. What makes our Technology Department different? The department is purposefully designed to give students access to much more than traditional workshop technology. Our facilities include: CAD and CAM capabilities 3D printing CNC routing Two laser cutters Specialist workshops and design studios Breakout classrooms and collaborative spaces Exhibition space Engineering, architectural, design and development expertise Facilities supporting engineering, ceramics, glass, fabrics and Hard Materials The department includes an electronic engineer, architect, special designer and development engineer, providing students with access to an extraordinary breadth of real-world experience. What you’ll bring Qualifications & experience A tertiary qualification – Bachelor's degree or higher (or equivalent) in a relevant teaching specialty. A Teaching qualification and current registration with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand. Strong secondary-school teaching experience in Hard Materials Technology. Experience with relevant Technology curriculum and assessment, ideally including NCEA and/or CIE. Experience leading, mentoring or developing colleagues would be highly regarded.
