Casual Lifeguard (Poura) Vacancies: Te Puna o Whakaehu (Mosgiel Based)

Dunedin City Council – Mosgiel, South Island Te Puna o Whakaehu is a modern aquatic facility in Mosgiel, just 15 - 20 minutes from Central Dunedin. With five pools (leisure, learners, lap, spa, and hydro) and over 20,000 visitors each month, we are a busy community hub open 7 days a week, 362 days a year. We are seeking additional casual lifeguards to support our team from November 2026 through to February 2027, with our greatest need being the Christmas and New Year period. While this recruitment is focused on meeting our summer staffing requirements, successful applicants will also have the opportunity to continue working beyond February. Competitive pay: Earn the living wage (currently $28.95 per hour), plus applicable allowances Flexibility: Pick and choose shifts that work for you and fit around other commitments Skill building: Gain hands on experience and develop transferable skills valuable in any career Foot in the door: Get exposure to the aquatics and recreation industry Make a difference: Play a key role in supporting the health and wellbeing of the Mosgiel community Qualification: The Pool Lifeguard Practising Certificate is a nationally recognised qualification Key responsibilities Safety first: Actively supervise pool and surrounding areas to ensure a safe environment for all visitors Emergency response: Respond quickly and effectively to incidents, including rescues and first aid situations Customer interaction: Communicate rules and key information clearly and confidently to a wide range of customers, using a respectful and educational approach to achieve positive outcomes Requirements Physical requirements: swim 200m freestyle in under 6 minutes, perform 50m breaststroke and 25m sidestroke confidently, tread water for 5 minutes and dive to a depth of 1.8m to retrieve an object. These skills are verified as part of the recruitment pre-screening process. Willingness to gain a Pool Lifeguard Practising Certificate (PLPC), which is a comprehensive qualification with specific requirements (see below) Reliable private transport, as public transport may not align with varying pool roster shifts Satisfactory police vetting required under the Children’s Act before and during employment Safety mindset, good communication and professionalism Pool Lifeguard Practising Certificate (PLPC) training To work as a lifeguard, you must hold a current PLPC. This qualification is essential and requires a significant commitment from both you and us. If you don’t already have this qualification we will invest in you by covering the cost of the course, paying for your training time, and providing the necessary resources and support. The total time committment is no less than 40 hours, possibly more depending on individual progress. The qualification has a minimum age requirement of 16 years of age. What the training involves In water training (likely delivered at Whakaehu). This is the most intensive component requiring around 16 – 20 hours of work. Content includes: Identifying customers in need of assistance Assessing and enacting the appropriate rescue protocols Use and management of fellow staff, supervisors and bystanders Practical and theoretical assessments. Non water training (delivered at Te Puna o Whakaehu unless otherwise stated). These components are critical to understanding how the facility operates. Plus first aid certification which is a full day delivered offsite. When Will Training Occur The in-water component of the Pool Lifeguard Practising Certificate (PLPC) is delivered in scheduled blocks throughout the year. Training dates are dependent on several factors, including minimum trainee numbers, candidate availability, trainer availability, access to pool space, and completion of all pre-employment requirements, including satisfactory police vetting result. As a result, training dates can be subject to change. While the anticipated schedule is outlined below, we ask applicants to allow for some flexibility should operational requirements or unforeseen circumstances arise. The current anticipated in water training dates are: October 17 and 18, 9:00am to 5:30pm Backup dates (if required): October 24 and 25, 9:00am to 5:30pm The remaining non-water-based training will take place following the in water component. These sessions are generally more flexible and can usually be arranged around your availability and the trainer's availability, as they do not require a full group to attend at the same time. #J-18808-Ljbffr
