We currently have offices in Christchurch and New Plymouth and employ approximately 40+ staff. Our focus is delivering specialised energy and water solutions, encompassing a wide range of commercial activities such as consulting, design, supply, specialist services, and contracting. The company primarily operates within the hydro-generation sector, but also leverages its specialist skills and services across a diverse array of industries, including wind and geothermal generation, gas, heavy industrial, and municipal sectors. We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated Mechatronics Design Engineer to work on a variety of projects for a range of blue-chip clients across Australia and New Zealand. About the Role We are seeking a solution-focused Mechatronics / Systems Engineer to act as a technical bridge between our mechanical, electrical, and control engineering disciplines. In this role, you will work on key renewable energy infrastructure (hydro, wind, geothermal) as well as specialized industrial plant as a design engineer. Your scope will span everything from detailed PLC control logic and P&ID design to high-speed data acquisition, vibration spectral analysis, and hands-on site commissioning in rugged or remote environments. You will report to the Design Engineering Team Lead and work with a team of mechatronics and electrical engineers to work on the premier energy assets in Australasia. Key Responsibilities Control Systems & Logic Design: Design and implement control logic for renewable assets, including PLC programming, SCADA integration, system descriptions, and closed-loop PID control loops for fluid power or positioning systems. System Integration & CAD: Develop P&IDs, schematic diagrams, and 3D CAD models, ensuring mechanical components (actuators, hydraulics, linkages) interface seamlessly with electronic sensors, instruments, and controllers. Condition Assessment & Surveillance: Setup and manage high-speed data acquisition (DAQ) hardware and software to capture transient events. Execute vibration spectral analysis, strain gauging, thermal, and pressure monitoring to diagnose mechanical health and provide predictive maintenance insights. Commissioning & Root-Cause Analysis: Work towards leading on-site testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning of control systems and hydro plant in remote or rugged environments to minimize downtime. Technical Advice & Consulting: Translate operational surveillance data and system modelling into actionable business insights, detailed technical reports, and feasibility assessments for clients. About You You are a sharp, hands-on engineer who thrives on solving complex electromechanical challenges. You are equally comfortable performing analytical modelling at your desk as you are getting hands-on on-site during commissioning. Qualifications & Core Competencies: Education: BE (Hons) or BSc in Engineering majoring in Mechatronics. Experience: Ideally 2+ years of relevant engineering experience within a consultancy, heavy industry, or renewable energy setting. Graduates will be considered depending on internship experience. Technical Breadth : A foundational knowledge spanning mechanical, electrical, and control systems. Familiarity with hydro processes, fluid power, or hydraulic steel structures is highly desirable. Should be comfortable working on both mechanical design tasks as well as electrical/systems designs. Field Capability: Willingness and capability to travel within New Zealand and internationally for site commissioning, surveillance, and testing. Soft Skills: Constructive communication skills, sound judgment, a collaborative attitude, and the ability to act independently and under pressure. Software packages : Experience with SolidWorks/CAD, Ansys/FEA, Python, vibration capture (enDAQ) and PLC coding packages. Desirable Additions: A Masters in Engineering or Science in a relevant field. Practical experience with DAQ platforms, strain gauging, or vibration measurement hardware. A solid understanding of international engineering standards (e.g., ISO, IEC).
