Community Disability Housing and Information Advisor Disability Connect – Auckland, North Island Community Disability Housing & Information Advisor Background Disability Connect is an information provider for disabled people, their parents, families and whānau. Our services are offered through a variety of media including seminars, workshops, support groups, expos, via e‑bulletin, community engagement and our website. We also provide a voice for families with government, support families of disabled people through counselling/pastoral care to help them establish and maintain community networks, and an information service to build capacity and capability in finding housing. Purpose of Position The purpose of the Community Disability Housing & Information Advisor role is pivotal to the development of the organisation, particularly in the delivery of the Board’s Strategic Plan and in the developing and maintaining of key community relationships. This role is best suited to people who genuinely enjoy networking, answering the phone to listen and respond to enquiries and up front speaking to families, professionals, and community groups. Responsibilities of the Position Community Information & Housing Advisor Pro-active participation in delivery of the organisation’s strategic plan. Attending to housing related enquiries from individuals, families, and professionals. Supporting the development of innovative information solutions, particularly in housing. Attending community events and visiting community hubs as agreed with the CEO. Supporting and potential co-ordinating community seminars / workshops with community partners. This involves occasional evening/weekend work. Developing ongoing relationships with parents, community groups and professionals, with a focus on housing. Actively promoting the work of Disability Connect in the Auckland community. Identify potential areas in the disability sector where Disability Connect can address a lack of information or help promote high caliber knowledge. Sharing disability information to communities. Recording interactions, enquiries and event participation in Salesforce Assisting internal and external reporting on housing activity as requested by the CEO. Administration Tasks First point of contact at Disability Connect, in person and by telephone, especially for housing. Recording interactions, enquiries and event participation of members in Salesforce Assisting and supporting Disability Connect reporting and publications. Supporting admin staff with information for the fortnightly e-bulletin, website and Facebook. Assisting with staff responsible for organising and co-ordinating events. Other duties, as can normally be expected, as directed by the Operations Manager. Environment and Hours Hours per week30-34 hours DaysMondays and at least 2 other days in the office 9am to 4.30 pm Remaining hours worked flexibly with some evening/weekend work Reports to: Operations Manager Person Specification SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE Essential An understanding that Disability Connect’s core vision is to serve families - helping disabled people and their families to access sound, reliable, balanced information, make their own informed choices and connect with their community. Knowledge and understanding of the NZ Disability Strategy Ability to relate well to a wide-range of people and cultures Building Inclusive Communities training Ability to take initiative, be innovative and keep up with trends in web-based and social media communication techniques Sound organisational and self-management skills Sound keyboard skills and software literacy Effective communication skills, both written and oral Confidence to present to groups in the community Availability to work occasional evenings (and very occasionally weekend work) Good planning and time management skills with attention to detail Self Motivated and able to work as part of a small energetic team Excellent listening skills Knowledge and understanding of the disability sector Have an understanding of the values underpinning Social Role Valorisation (SRV) Ability to travel independently Understanding of Enabling Good Lives Preferred Experience and understanding of the not-for-profit sector Tertiary Certificate or Diploma in relevant field EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Essential Experience of work in the disability sector. We help families of disabled children and young people build networks, access reliable information, and feel confident navigating the disability sector. We hold both a CALD DIAS contract with Te Whatu Ora and a DIAS contract with the Ministry of Social Development. Our work includes culturally and religiously appropriate information and advice, support groups, publications, and one‑to‑one consultations via phone, WeChat, text/apps, Zoom, email, and in‑person meetings.
