Job Description
Jora New Zealand will close on 9th September 2026. About the Opportunity We're working exclusively with a specialist geotechnical consultancy expanding its Sydney presence. This is a boutique firm with a strong reputation for delivering technically rigorous, value-engineered solutions across complex infrastructure projects - think tunnelling, deep foundations, ground improvement, slope engineering, and temporary works. This is a genuine leadership hire - you'll be joining a small, high-calibre team where your technical authority will shape project outcomes, your input will directly influence the firm's direction, and the project exposure and autonomy are well above what you'd get in a larger firm. If you're looking to relocate, or have thought about the benefits of moving from New Zealand to Australia, this is a perfect opportunity. AUD, Sydney life style and a chance to broaden your experience internationally. Seize the chance and make the move. The Role As a Senior/Principal Geotechnical Engineer, you'll provide technical leadership across geotechnical investigations, analysis, and design for a range of infrastructure-focused projects. You'll take full ownership of complex deliverables, review the work of less experienced engineers, lead the team, and act as a trusted technical point of contact for clients. Day-to-day, you can expect: Leading geotechnical analysis, design, and report writing on complex and multidisciplinary projects Directing site investigations and overseeing data interpretation Taking design authorship on foundations, retaining structures, ground improvement schemes, and excavation support Acting as a senior technical liaison with contractors, clients, and project stakeholders Mentoring and reviewing the work of intermediate and junior engineers Contributing to business development, proposal writing, and client relationship management Providing technical assurance and peer review across the team's project portfolio About You You'll be a geotechnical engineer with a BE (Hons) or equivalent in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, and 10+ years of experience in a consulting environment, with a track record of taking projects from concept through to delivery. Critically, we're looking for candidates with a strong infrastructure project background - transport, utilities, civil works - rather than building-only experience. Genuinely willing to relocate. You'll need: Deep technical expertise across geotechnical analysis, design, and site investigation A strong track record delivering infrastructure projects (roads, tunnels, pipelines, drainage, or similar) Demonstrated ability to lead and review the work of others Excellent technical writing, reporting, and client-facing communication skills Experience mentoring junior and intermediate engineers Full working rights in Australia (PR or citizenship preferred) Sydney-based or genuinely willing to relocate Proficiency with PLAXIS, Slide, or similar analysis software is expected; CPEng (or eligibility) would be highly regarded. What's On Offer Competitive senior-level salary, commensurate with experience A close-knit, technically excellent team environment Genuine autonomy and influence over technical direction Varied and challenging infrastructure project exposure A firm that values engineering thinking over box-ticking A clear path toward equity or leadership progression for the right person Additional information Specialist geotechnical consultancy with a strong project pipeline Boutique team environment Infrastructure-focused project work #J-18808-Ljbffr
