Hospice Mid-Northland – Kerikeri, North Island About the role - Counsellor Kaitohutohu 0.6FTE (24 hours per week) The Counsellor Kaitohutohu provides compassionate, culturally responsive counselling and bereavement support to patients, families and whānau under the service of Hospice Mid-Northland (HMN), with a strong focus on supporting Māori whānau through a Te Ao Māori informed lens. Working within the patient and whānau support team, the role delivers skilled assessment and therapeutic care, supports interdisciplinary practice, and contributes to quality improvement in holistic palliative care. The role actively considers bias and supports care which upholds tino rangatiratanga. Key responsibilities Provide a specialist counselling service to patients, families and whānau Complete psychosocial and therapeutic assessments Provide relevant therapeutic support, using a range of counselling methods in one to one, group and whānau meetings Advocate as needed Maintain accurate clinical notes and documentation and uphold confidentiality and ethical information sharing Participate in interdisciplinary team discussions and shared care planning Develop and maintain professional relationships with community agencies to enable optimum service linkages for patients, families and whānau Provide bereavement support in line with HMN processes Maintain NZAC membership and ethical practice Attend supervision, in-service training, and CPD Integrate relevant research to strengthen service delivery Contribute to or lead initiatives that enhance holistic support for patients, families and whānau Provide education to staff and volunteers about the psychological and emotional aspects of palliative care Actively uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi and support Māori whānau through a Te Ao Māori and tikanga-informed lens Lead or strongly support culturally appropriate navigation, advocacy, and connection with relevant Māori health or community supports as appropriate Respect the values and beliefs of various cultures, religious and social groups Participate in performance review and development, including attending training relevant to the position About you Tertiary qualification in counselling Current NZAC membership (provisional or full) Demonstrated experience providing counselling in health, mental health, trauma, or grief-related settings Demonstrated ability to deliver culturally responsive practice, including understanding of Te Ao Māori, tikanga and Tiriti o Waitangi Strong assessment skills, including psychosocial and risk assessment Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team Commitment to professional supervision and ongoing development Experience in palliative care, hospice, or end-of-life settings Knowledge of grief and bereavement frameworks, including complicated grief Understanding of community networks and agencies supporting patients and families Training or experience in trauma-informed practice Familiarity with Te Ao Māori approaches to healing and whānau support Previous experience supporting staff with debriefing or ethical reflection Personal Attributes Warm, compassionate, and grounded presence Emotionally resilient and able to work with grief, distress, and uncertainty Culturally humble, open-minded, and respectful Strong reflective practice and self-awareness Able to hold professional boundaries with kindness and clarity Flexible, adaptable, and comfortable working in a dynamic clinical environment Values teamwork, collaboration, and gentle communication Reliable, organised, and able to manage workload responsibly About us Hospice Mid-Northland (HMN) provides community-based specialist palliative care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to patients living in the mid-north. Our area covers from Taupo Bay in the north to Hukerenui in the south and coast to coast in between serving a population of over 45,000 people. Our clinical team provides care and support to patients and their family/whanau in their own home. There is no charge for these services.
