The Wellington Boys' & Girls' Institute – Wellington Central, North Island Are you a youth worker who can connect with rangatahi, create a positive group culture and bring learning to life through practical, engaging experiences? BGI is looking for a Youth Worker to join our Te Whare Taiohi alternative education team in central Wellington. This is a hands‑on role combining mentoring, pastoral support, activity‑based learning and support for young people’s education. You will work alongside teachers, youth workers and the wider BGI team to create a safe and supportive environment where rangatahi can build confidence, strengthen relationships and re‑engage with learning. About the role No two days will look exactly the same. You might support a young person with their Te Kura work, facilitate a group conversation, plan an Adventure or Activity Based Learning session, cook alongside students, run an offsite gym activity or help a young person develop a passion project. You will: Build consistent, positive relationships with rangatahi Provide group mentoring, pastoral support and learning support Plan and facilitate engaging activities and conversations Help create a positive group culture where young people can thrive Work alongside teachers, whānau, schools and community agencies Support Collaborative Action Plans and pathways for rangatahi Maintain clear pastoral, programme, health and safety, and evaluation records Contribute to other BGI youth programmes when needed What you’ll bring Understands youth development and the issues affecting young people Has experience working with rangatahi from diverse backgrounds Can create safe, positive and engaging learning environments Brings empathy, energy, reliability and initiative Is creative and confident planning activities for individuals and groups Works well as part of a collaborative team Has a practical commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi Can build trusted relationships with young people, whānau and partner organisations Has relevant experience or a professional education or youth work qualification, or is working towards one Has a full, clean driver licence, ideally held for at least three years You will also need sound administration and communication skills and an understanding of confidentiality, professional boundaries and the Code of Ethics for Youth Work in Aotearoa. The salary range is $55,000–$75,000 FTE, depending on experience and capabilities.
